In my 2019 series of paintings, I was inspired by the “lack of depth” that works by women artists are
criticized for in a patriarchal system. The symbolical idea of women’s position in the artworld
appears on the level of texture. I used scribbling which is an act of writing and drawing at the
same time. I concentrated on the visual similarity between the print of human hair and hair of a
paintbrush, using simple brushstrokes on canvas which purposefully emphasize surface textures
of painting. Another layer in this series were hidden scribbles – names of women artists,
historical and contemporary, generally known and unknown. Scribbles as marginalia again
reflect on the historic status of female artists.
